I mean, there’s multiple factors that come in which caused the downfall of the American mafia. Most people will tell you that “the Rico statutes” was the downfall of the mafia. it was only a symptom to the downfall. We can argue forever, and say that this guy ruined it, Gotti ruined it, so and so ruined it, but there’s only one main factor that ruined it all for everyone. If you really think about it, it all leads to this issue. That issue is drugs. Yup not murder, not the Rico statutes, but drugs. It was the underlings meddling in drugs and drug dealing. The thing is, it brought too much outsiders into the circle who had little to know, respect or obligations towards the mafia. When mafiosos start getting addicted to drugs, the oaths they took really don’t amount to anything. It’s a matter of fact their whole life doesn’t amount to anything and they really don’t care anymore. There’s no underlying cause, they didn’t keep it strong, they let too many people in, they made too many people. then, people started getting involved for the wrong reasons instead of being obligated and having strong emotions and respect towards your upbringing and your culture, instead wanted to exploit the mafia rather than embrace it. This is why it lasted for so long prior to the 70s and 80s, which I believe was the downfall of the mafia. I would say the beginning of the end of the mafia can be rewound back all the way to the demayo crew.
